Island State of Mind: Finding Peace on Pelee
Ten thousand acres of tranquility — that’s what you’ll uncover during a visiting to Pelee Island.
Picture a day outdoors building sandcastles and swimming at the beach or hiking along the water’s edge. At night, gather ’round a fire for an evening of storytelling and stargazing.
“It’s definitely more of a cottage-country type of destination,” says Pelee Island mayor Cathy Miller. “It’s a place to spend time with family and really take the time to unplug and create memories.”
The best way to get around is on two wheels — hop on a bike and ride the waterfront trail, which follows the shoreline all around the island. “Every trail feels like you’re the only person on it,” says Miller. “Part of the thing people love about the islands is that they’re not overpopulated.”
A visit to Pelee Island Winery — Canada’s largest privately owned estate winery — is a must. Take a tour or settle into the wine garden to pair a glass of grapes with a wood-fired pizza and magnificent waterfront views. For those seeking perch, Westview Tavern (family owned for three generations) is a local favorite. Stone House 1891 — built of rocks quarried from the island — offers a stunning view of the sunset.
You won’t find any hotels on Pelee. Instead, settle into a cozy bed-and-breakfast or cottage or rent a campsite.
“If it’s less you’re after, we have more of it,” Miller says. “We’re loved for what we’re not.”
Embrace the pawsibilities: “Dogs are welcome just about anywhere,” Miller says. “If you’re a dog, Pelee Island is a great place to be.”
