The Stubborn Brother Pizza Bar Soars After Dave Portnoy's One Bite Review
The Toledo, Ohio, pizza joint is struggling to keep up with business after the Barstool Sports icon paid a visit.
Dave Portnoy took his first bite and paused.
Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, had a quizzical look on his face as he stood in front of The Stubborn Brother Pizza Bar in Toledo, Ohio. It was clear that — good or bad — this was no ordinary pizza.
Finally, his verdict: "This is the best college campus pizza I've ever had. I don’t think it’s particularly close. I'm racking my brain. I've been on tons of campuses. This is the best college pizza I’ve ever had."
And Portnoy would know. In addition to offering his opinions on sports and the world in general via Barstool Sports, he's launched a pizza review app called "One Bite by Barstool Sports" which has info on more than 400 pizza places. He claims to eat at least a slice of pizza every single day.
After sharing his take on Stubborn Brothers, Portnoy went inside to investigate.
He discovered the restaurant uses a special water filter — called a New York WaterMaker — which creates the exact hardness, molecular structure and chemical composition of New York City water.
Since Portnoy aired his review to his more than 10 million combined social media followers, business has soared.
“It’s exciting. My staff is excited,” Stubborn Brothers owner John Mancy told the Toledo Blade. "I see a lot of [University of Toledo] students coming more because everyone is into Dave Portnoy and Barstool Sports. Our student numbers these past few days have really gone up.”
On a normal day, Stubborn Brothers sells about 175 pizzas. These days, they're pushing past the 400 mark.
"College campuses don’t have this type of pizza ever," Portnoy concluded. "This is aa stunning development in the snow and the sleet in Toledo, Ohio."
